"The IAAF will build the track in the coming four months," Diack, who was a guest at Sunday's Great Ethiopian Run, told Reuters. “The athletes deserve it."
Ethiopian athletes have won six distance gold medals in the last two Olympic Games even through the national team trains on a worn-out track.
"There are holes in it that you have to jump over," said twice Olympic 10,000 metres champion Haile Gebrselassie.
Diack also discussed other goals of the Ethiopian athletic federation such as an athletic complex in the Sendafa area on the outskirts of Addis Ababa and the possibility of holding an IAAF event in Ethiopia.
"The problem with Addis Ababa is the altitude," he said.
"Many athletes will not come. But if they want an international event in Ethiopia, we are open to discussing the idea."
