In announcing the deal to back the tournament, which is known on the Tour as The Barclays, it was confirmed that two editions of the event would be staged at Long Island’s Bethpage State Park Black course. Although the public course has never hosted the tournament before, it has staged two US Open events, in 2002 and 2009.
Barclays’ sponsorship was due to expire after the 2012 tournament, which will now be staged at Bethpage. The 2013 Barclays will be played at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey, followed by Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus in New Jersey in 2014 and Plainfield in 2015 before the event returns to Bethpage.
This year’s tournament will take place at Plainfield Country Club in Edison, New Jersey. The Barclays is the first of four play-off events during the race for the US$10 million FedEx Cup prize, featuring a 125-man field. The value of the Barclays sponsorship has not been disclosed.
“We're excited about that rotation,” said PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem. “Obviously, playing at Bethpage Black is in and of itself special. But also the concept...was to try to move The Barclays around the metropolitan area...and a rotation that moves us over from New Jersey to Long Island for these next few years will work nicely.”
