Under the terms of the deal, ESPN on ABC will air four additional IndyCar races each year and ABC will televise the 100th running of the Indy 500 in 2016. From next year, ABC's coverage of the Indy 500 and the IZOD IndyCar Series will be expanded to include live streaming from ABC's onboard cameras on the ESPN3.com broadband platform while the action will also be available to ESPN3 subscribers via Indycar.com.
ABC syndicates action to broadcast partners around the world, and for this year’s Indianapolis 500 the network utilised 64 high definition cameras to capture the action. The remaining races in the IndyCar season are covered by a separate broadcast deal with cable channel Versus, which will be rebranded as NBC Sports Channel from January 2, 2012.
“We value our partnership with ABC and ESPN and are pleased that the relationship will continue into the future,” said Jeff Belskus, CEO and president of Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation. “As broadcast technology advances and opportunities arise to implement new technology, ABC's production team continues to seek out innovative ways to televise our sport.”
George Bodenheimer, the president of ESPN and ABC Sports, added: “The Indianapolis 500 and ABC have been together since 1965 and we are very proud to extend the relationship with this new agreement. The 500 is a uniquely American event and a Memorial Day tradition, and we especially look forward to televising the 100th edition of the race in 2016.”
