In the current Champions League contract, Globo, Bandeirantes (through a sublicensing deal with Globo) and Esporte Interativo hold the free-to-air rights. The new agreement, announced on Thursday will see Globo, Brazil’s largest media group, sublicense to Bandeirantes the Wednesday first choice live match up until the quarter-finals.
As of the quarter-finals, Globo and Bandeirantes will broadcast on a live basis the first pick of the match week. In addition and throughout the season, extensive news coverage of the competition will be featured on Globo and a highlights programme will be shown every match week on Bandeirantes. Live match coverage of the Champions League will also be available on the internet via Globoesporte.com and on mobile.
A UEFA statement read: "UEFA is delighted to continue its partnership with Globo, who delivered impressive audience figures the past two seasons. The renewal of this deal will allow football fans across the country to watch Europe's premier club football competition on Brazil's strongest channel and further increase the reach of the competition in the territory."
Brazil’s remaining Champions League media rights packages are still to be awarded and will be tendered in a second round. In addition, no Europa League rights are being awarded at this stage. Rights deals for both competitions had previously been expected to be sealed this week.
