The Aljazeerasport.TV service will broadcast more than 13,000 live events every year as well as all of Al Jazeera Sport’s television channels. Perform, which “built the platforms” for the broadcasts, will provide some of its own portfolio of sports rights for the service, comprising some 3,000 events. The service has launched online and via an iPad application, and users will be given a free trial lasting one month before subscriptions thereafter of US$10 per month or $50 per year.
Mobile applications for iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Nokia devices will also be available. Al Jazeera Sport holds rights to the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 2012, the UEFA Champions League and Europa League, La Liga in Spain, Serie A in Italy, Ligue 1 in France as well as top men’s and women’s tennis action and the National Basketball Association.
“Al Jazeera Sport has built the most extensive set of sports channels in the world and we are pleased to take our service to another level,” Al Jazeera Sport general manager Nasser al Khelaifi said. “Digital is expanding rapidly across the MENA region and throughout the world and these platforms will allow sports fans to watch every match we own, whenever and wherever they want.”
Simon Denyer, joint CEO of Perform, added: “The sheer scale of ambition and sports rights that Al Jazeera Sport has makes this the most exciting multi-sports streaming project we have ever seen and we are delighted to partner with Al Jazeera Sport. Our own expertise, technology and access to content will help Al Jazeera Sport's ambition in this exciting new area.”
